The First Of A Few!

This weekend sees the first in an extensive round of 40th Birthday celebrations that will be happening around these parts this year. The honour of reaching this milestone first goes to the friend I made on that dreaded first day as the new boy at school in 1979.

These are two of the earliest songs I remember us sneaking in and listening to from his older brothers collections when they weren't around and both on 7" single, those were the days.

TRB - Martin

The Only Ones - Another Girl Another Planet

Cheers and all the best S.

Is it wrong to still address your mates by their school boy nicknames when your in your fourth decade?

No. My sister does it with her mates all the time.

No. Unless they were cruelly applied and the nickname is no longer apt (eg plooky, short-arse, speccy).

BTW, geat songs.

Mmmm - I like enduring 'terms of endearment' - even when no longer applicable.

My schoolmate 'Ginger' lost all his bodily hair when 19 in a tragic incident. At 46, and bald as a coot, calling him 'Ginger' holds a certain resonance - whilst confusing those (incl his wife) who have only known him sans hair.

We didn't have many of those nicknames at school; it was mostly surnames we were all known by, probably because the teachers all addressed us by surname.

I did get called You Mod for the last three years though, as if it was an insult.

I didn't have one and for a while was a bit put out. I seem to have acquired one later than usual, the wife calls me moaning faced git, I think that it is a term of endearment.

I want that record player. It can sit in my fantasy apartment where there is nothing but a futon and a row of mint Blue Note LPs leaning against a makeshift housebrick bookcase and cat called Monty.

PS: The LPs are not leaning against the cat. He is just, you know, about.

This is true.

You're still in touch with your school friends?

Yeah some of them.

I think if you're still friends with people whose nicknames you knew at school you MUST use them! (Unless they hate them, of course)
