Haunted Dancehall

We haven't had anything from Lord Sabre here for quite some time.

In 1995 the Sabres of Paradise released a series of records, one on 12", one 10" and a single sided 7" single where various luminaries of the dance world such as the Chemical Brothers and LFO remixed tracks from the previous year's excellent Haunted Dancehall long player, with varying degrees of success.

The final release in the series was the single sided 7" where In The Nursery don't remix the final  track from the album but actually perform it as a beautiful but also slightly unsettling piece of modern classical music.

Not the sort of thing that you would want to listen to on a Sunday if you were comimg down from a particularly hedonistic weekend. Not something that troubles me much these days or I suspect many of the people who visit here apart from maybe Mondo of course, as those kinds of weekends are sadly distant memories!

It's Friday . . Let's Dance

On paper it was a match made in heaven, get one of the best djs and remixers of the day to remix an already great throbbing piece of progressive house by arguably the greatest dj and remixer of the time, what could go wrong?

Absolutely nothing,  David Holmes passed back an amazing piece of music that no matter where you played it it sounded wonderful. It was equally as powerful when listened to at volume at home as when dropped in the middle of a sweaty, smoke filled club. For me Smokebelch II is the pinnacle of the prrogressive dance sound, other tracks come close but none better David Holmes' mix of the tune in my opinion.

Right, I'm off to a wedding, seriously I am.

Ooh Baby

Here is the second release on the Sabres Of Paradise label from 1993.

Secret Knowledge were Kris Needs, music journalist turned musician/remixer and Wonder Schneider vocalist who also recorded as Delta Lady on Hard Hands.

The duo produced 2 singles for Sabres of Paradise, Sugar Daddy which is probably the better known release and Ooh Baby which is a bit of a laid back, dubby, progressive house classic. They went on to release an album on Deconstruction in 1995 which I didn't buy so can't tell you if it was any good or not.

I'm off back to the late 70's tomorrow night or so it seems when you walk into the Barrowlands on St Patrick's night to see SLF and then I'm off to Belfast at stupid o'clock on Thursday morning, so probably won't post anything until Friday.

Shall we have a little bit of Ska infected Big Beat today from the man with more aliases than a con man  with loads of snidey names?

Here we have Norman Cook in the guise of Fatboy Slim, remix a release by Norman Cook in the guise of the mighty dub katz with writing credits to Norman Cook in the guise of Pizzaman. This track was originally released on the Southern Fried label in 1995 and entitled Son of Wilmot. I wonder if you can guess why?

Speaking of Wilmot, it appears that I have misinformed you, as I have been corrected by Curtis, the track that I posted on Wednesday as Wilmot's Last Skank is really Wilmot Meets Lord Scruffage, for 15 years I have gotten the tracks mixed up as my 10" has the labels back to front and nobody, until now has informed me of this. I have to confess that Last Skank is not one off my favourite Sabres tracks

Wilmot Revisited.

There was a comment over at Ctel's excellent Acid Test blog on one of his postings on the genius known as Andy Weatherall's Sabres of Paradise requesting Wilmot's Last Skank, a track I hadn't played for quite some time. It is the b-side of the Wilmot remix 10" single.

To be honest with you it is not that different from the version I posted here a couple of months ago, a bit  sparcer than the original and nearly a couple of minutes shorter, still very very good.

It has been a while since I featured the talents of Mr Weatherall.

How about some voodoo skank from Lord Sabre along with Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns in the form of the Sabres of Paradise. Wilmot was originally on the excellent Haunted Dancehall album. The version posted is the 12" single version.
