Lilac Wine
I will not be imbibing tonight on account of having to drive into the town to see Allo Darlin' in the Captain's Rest. But may I suggest something sweet and heady for the rest of you drunkards out there.
I promise that this is the first and last time Jeff Beck appears on this blog. It could have been worse it could have been the Elkie Brooks version which I had to endure during my childhood my mother being a fan of Elkie's and once a record went on the music center in the living room it stayed there for months if not years.
I will however have not a word said against Pearl's A Singer. She stands up when she plays the piano, you know.
Have a good weekend people.

I'm Really Not Sure
On the three occasions I have seen Imelda May live, one of the highlights of the night has always been her cover version of Tainted Love, so when the new album popped through the door, it was the first track that I put on.
After listening to it now for the fourth time, I really don't know if I like it or not which is a new feeling for me being undecided about music.
It would appear that I may be starting to become indecisive.

My Baby Left Me
Straying into Swiss Adam territory here, however I'm not sure of SA's views on modern day rockabilly or if it's just the real deal 50s stuff that floats his boat. If you haven't checked out Bagging Area's Friday Rockabilly feature you really should, all killer no filler as they say and after 18 weeks not far off a cracking compilation although due to the length of the tracks you could probably wait 'til week 28 or 30.
Anyway, here is a cover version of My Baby Left Me, an Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup penned tune recorded by Elvis Presley at RCA's New York studios in 1956 which was the b side of Presley's I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.
Here it is covered by the Irish Rockabilly screamer, Imelda May who has featured on this blog a couple of times before. Again, the track is used as a b side, this time for May's Latest single Psycho. In my opinion the b side is the stronger of the two tracks but maybe that is because I'm more familiar with it.

Imelda May

I'm off to see Imelda May again tonight. Last time it was like going back in time to the late 50's, more quiffs than a Smiths convention.
Imelda May - Wild About My Lovin'
Blue Harlem - Drown In My Own Tears
The Blue Harlem track is from when Imelda May was the singer with them, their sound is more jazz and blues than the more rockabilly feel of her solo stuff.

Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't I?

Since it seems to be new music week in our little corner of of the blogisphere, I thought i would join JC and Davy H and post on something that was new to me last November but apparently wasn't that fresh as the lady in question has toured with loads of people and appeared on Later with Jools Holland which I haven't really watched for a few years now, probably not since the Fall were on it.
Anyway, Imelda May is a Jazz and Rockabilly singer from Ireland who has been on the go since 2003. She has toured with the likes of Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, the afore mentioned smug bastard Holland and Elton John but don't let that put you off. She released her first solo album Love Tattoo late last year. The album has a mixture of influences from Ella Fitzgerald to Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson and to these ears was just what the doctor ordered after overdosing on pasty boys and girls in skinny jeans doing the "indie" thing. She is also extremely attractive and could hold here own against any of the Ghost of Electricity's "indie poppets" but as we know that is just superficial and you would never catch any of us earnest bloggers indulging in such shallow, sexist wishful thinking.
I have tickets to see her and her band on Sunday night at King Tut's, which I'm looking forward to and which will no doubt be mentioned in later dispatches.
