A Bit Of Soul Will Do The Trick
It's 02:07 on the morning of the 24th of June and have run out of ideas for the mid week post while I'm sunning my self on the beach in Cornwall.
If all else fails bung on a bit of soul, that was always what I did in the pub when I lost inspiration. Here is a outstanding piece of deep soul from Doris Duke.

So Many Days
Bloody hell, that was a quick week!
Back to the daily grind for me and I can't think of a better way to start than with this track, a recent discovery. I'm not sure whether this should be classed as soul, R & B or whatever other catagory it may fall into. It is a brilliant track which should brighten up your Monday morning.
I know absolutely nothing about the Vonns. This track was on a split 7", released recently on Fryers, with another belter of a track, Sad But True by Elaine Armstrong on the A side. Worth seeking out.

All In My Mind
I think that a bit of deep soul is the order of the day.
Maxine Brown is well known in northern circles for the outstanding track One In A Million but here is a different beast altogether, an absolutley lovely tearjerker of a ballad from 1960. The track which was also penned by Brown got to number two in the R& B chart.
Maxine went on to record for Wand for most of the 60s putting vocals to tracks by the likes of Goffin & King and Ashford and Simpson during this era all of the backing vocals on her tracks were sung by Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom.
Today at the age of 75 she is still performing. The female soul singers of that generation definately have staying power.

Slip Away
Sometimes a Guinness and a bit of soul music is all you need.
Sit down for a couple of minutes and enjoy.
Now wasn't that good.

Every One Loves A Cover . . . Right?
And this one is a belter.
Time Is On My Side was originally recorded by Kai Winding and his orchestra in 1964.
This recording by Irma Thomas was released on Imperial in 1964, the same year as the Rolling Stones covered the song. Irma's voice is just the right side of manic and the production is magnificent.

I'm Undecided
I'm undecided is an album track from Toussaint McCall which was included on Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Volume 3.
McCall was born in Monroe, Louisianna in 1934 and is best known for his 1967 release Nothing Takes The Place of You and apart from the fact that he appeared in John Walters film Hairspray miming to Nothing Takes The Place of You I know nothing else about the man, although I'm sure I've seen his name in brackets on a couple of singles but that could just be nonsense.
In my opinion I'm Undecided is a better song than the one that he is remembered for.
As I've said before all four volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures are essential for anyone with at least a passing interest in Deep Soul.
