Nineteen

How serious can life be at nineteen? Asks Mr H over at the TGOE.

For me it was rather a momentous year, the girl I mistakenly thought was the love of my life buggered off down under, I decided further education was no longer for me and jumped without fully thinking about it into an apprenticeship instead and it also saw me embrace whole heartedly that thing called HOUSE, which I had been dabbling in up until then.

I was a student in Manchester (developing theme here), the beginning of what became the '80s, the highlight of that year just before turning 20, of becoming a member of the Hacienda within months of its opening (and what a different "beast" it was in the early days)........Nineteen, all the advantages of being an adult before the accumulated onslaught of responsibilities.

Anon - it would have been good to have seen the Hac in the early days

Memories of the Hacienda in the early days - cold (it was a warehouse) and cool (the crowd was[or thought they were], I wasn't) - the records - Mann Parrish- Hip Hop Be Bop; Siouxsie & The Banshees - Slowdive; and the night finished with Nina Simone - My baby Just cares for me, which would entice girls in mid length dresses onto the floor to dance in a kind of sloping shuffle. Friday nights were Electro night - full of hip hop and regularly half empty, no queue for the bar. And what is forgotten is that Fac51 was also a live venue, so fond memories of New Order, The Smiths, Orange Juice, OMD (supported by Howard Jones - curious times), The Danse Society, The Psychedelic Furs.......
